Toronto-based R&B singer-songwriter, Aqyila returns with her latest single, “OH!,” out today via Sony Music Entertainment Canada. With this latest offering, Aqyila kicks it off with rich a cappella harmonies before launching into a powerful R&B anthem about reclaiming her broken heart. Elevated by her signature runs and catchy harmonies, “OH!” brings the heat.

With a JUNO Award nomination for her first-ever release, “Vibe for Me (Bob for Me),” and over 10 million Spotify streams, the rising star is keen to establish herself as a force in the R&B space. Fans can rely on Aqyila for music that not only showcases her unique vocal tone, but also delivers uplifting lyrics with powerful messages about self-love.

“I want to make sure my music can empower and encourage whoever listens to it,” she says. “When you hear me sing, everyone should hear the joy and the community that backs me and fuels me.”

Drawing inspiration from music legends like Whitney Houston, Tamia, and Fantasia, her enigmatic tone and melodies effortlessly capture a dynamic story. Aqyila, who started her career by writing and covering songs on TikTok during the pandemic, now has a place on the app’s Top 100 TikTok All-Time Top Tracks Chart. Of the style of music she continues to write, Aqyila says she often looks towards her Jamaican roots and past life experiences as a source of inspiration.

“Your mind and words are such powerful things,” she says. “I believe that you have to share them and speaking about my experiences through music has opened up my life in ways I didn’t even think were possible.”

“OH!” is the product of Aqyila’s collaboration with esteemed writerTrey Campbell (Ella Mai, HER, Giveon, John Legend) and produced by Phinisey (Jessie Reyez, Qveen Herby). This upbeat, melodic R&B track showcases her maturing vocals while capturing the poignant emotions experienced as the result of a failed relationship.

Singer-songwriter Aqyila is bringing soulful anthems back to R&B music. Big, shiny, hopeful ones, that is. The goal was first achieved last year when the Canadian talent dropped “Vibe for Me (Bob for Me)”—her first official single with Sony Music Entertainment Canada. The song—nominated at the 2022 JUNO Awards for ‘Contemporary R&B Recording of the Year’—is full of infectious island-inspired hooks that echo her Jamaican roots and, like some of Aqyila’s favorite artists, blends and bends pop, soul, and R&B genres. Her music is backed by a strong message, which relays the glories of sisterhood, positivity, and self-acceptance, all things Aqyila swears by. With her previous release, “Pressure,” a sultry, but fun R&B track, the young star celebrated themes of self-confidence. Now, as she returns with “OH!,” Aqyila begins to explore life’s inevitable and sometimes hurtful rites of passage.
