Review: AV & The Inner City - 'Lion at the Gate'

AV & The Inner City

AV & The Inner City has once again proven why they are one of the most exciting acts to emerge from Canada’s vibrant Soul and Roots scene. Their latest single, Lion at the Gate, is a masterclass in vocal harmony, storytelling, and the transformative power of music. The six-piece, all-female vocal group, led by the indefatigable Ann Vriend (AV), takes listeners on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment that is both personal and universal.

The song opens with a sparse, evocative piano melody that draws you into its introspective mood, accompanied by AV’s soulful lead vocals. As the lyrics unfold, “Lion at the Gate” reveals its poignant theme: the fear and self-sabotage that can keep us from achieving our potential. The metaphor of the lion guarding a gate serves as a powerful symbol of these internal barriers, and AV’s lyrics encourage listeners to face their fears head-on with courage and hope.

What sets this track apart is its breathtaking vocal arrangement. The group's gospel-style harmonies rise and fall with a palpable sense of emotion, culminating in an anthemic refrain that feels like a triumphant call to action. The simplicity of the instrumental backdrop—just piano, bass, and drums — allows the group’s voices to take center stage, showcasing their extraordinary blend of power and subtlety.

Recorded at Riverdale Recorders in the heart of Edmonton’s McCauley neighborhood, the song reflects the authenticity and community spirit that AV & The Inner City embody. Co-produced by AV and Elie Mercier, the track captures a sense of immediacy and raw emotion, making it impossible not to feel moved by the performance.

The song’s accompanying cover artwork — a serendipitous photo of the Northern Lights resembling a lion — adds another layer of resonance to the track’s message. This imagery, captured in the Edmonton area by a band member’s partner, perfectly encapsulates the beauty and mystery of facing life’s challenges with determination and grace.

AV & The Inner City’s story, which began during socially distanced porch concerts in the pandemic, is as compelling as their music. Their collective of diverse talents and backgrounds — ranging from R&B to Jazz, Indigenous music to Czech folk — creates a rich tapestry that is uniquely Canadian. With “Lion at the Gate”, they have crafted a song that is not only a joy to listen to but also a source of inspiration.

For a group still in its early years, their achievements are nothing short of remarkable. From winning the Edmonton Folk Music Festival’s Emerging Artist Award to garnering national radio play and streaming milestones, AV & The Inner City are on an unstoppable trajectory. Their live performances, described as soul-stirring and invigorating, continue to captivate audiences across the country.

As someone who deeply admires projects that bring together extraordinary talent and heartfelt storytelling, I am utterly enchanted by what AV & The Inner City has created. This group doesn’t just make music — they craft experiences that linger long after the final note. “Lion at the Gate” is an exceptional addition to their already impressive catalog, and I cannot wait to see where their journey takes them next.

Whether you’re a fan of Roots, Soul, or Gospel-inspired music, this track is a must-listen. AV & The Inner City remind us all of the power of community, resilience, and the courage to face our own lions — and for that, I couldn’t be more grateful.
