Renowned Voice In Canadian Roots Music Lori Yates Has Released 'Alive' From Upcoming Album

By Stevie Connor.

Trailblazer Lori Yates is a renowned voice in Canadian Roots music, one of the original pioneers of "Alternative Country" in Canada. The Band's Rick Danko described Yates as having "that desperate Canadian sound," sealing her legendary status.

With Matador, her 8th recording, Lori emerges with a masterful collection of superb Roots/Indie songs. Her songs wrap around you like your favourite sweater. Lori's voice is like liquid honey; it cracks in all the right places and kicks your ass with strength and conviction. Matador includes a re-recording of her Guy Clark co-write “Time After Time.”

This recording holds special significance as it includes the final contribution from the late David Baxter, the esteemed guitarist, old friend and bandmate from Hey Stella, making it a poignant tribute to his musical legacy.

Matador was recorded at Blue Rodeo's Woodshed Studios and co-produced by Tim Vesely of the Rheostatics. The first single — "Alive" — is available now on all platforms including loriyates.bandcamp.com and the full album in January 2024.

Yates first catapulted onto Toronto's Queen West scene in the 1980s with her cowpunk band Rang Tango. Then scooped up by Nashville, Lori performed and recorded with many music legends.

She met Johnny & June, was mentored by Tammy Wynette, jammed with Jerry Jeff Walker, partied with Harlan Howard, and recorded music with Colin Linden, Jim Cuddy, and Rick Danko. Additionally, she sang duets with Tom Wilson and Greg Allman and even enjoyed jelly beans with Roy Acuff.

Many awards, accolades and nominations followed, including JUNO, CCMA, Polaris Prize (Longer List), Lifetime Achievement awards, and Songwriter of the Year and a SOCAN #1 Award.

Lori's transition from major labels like Sony Nashville and Virgin Music Canada to her independent recordings, where she has created her best work, only demonstrates the ongoing depth of her conviction.

Yates's songwriting is celebrated through the permanent enshrinement of her lyrics from her song "Angels With Bloody Knees" in Hamilton's Gore Park.

Lori founded the "Creative Genius Songwriting" and is a popular songwriting mentor, nurturing emerging songwriters.

Lori Yates marches to her own drum. Her music exudes genuine artistry and authenticity. She is an OG, a lifer.
