Nashville-Based The HawtThorns Release Single & Music Video For 'Nothing But A Shadow, Ahead Of Upcoming Album 'Zero Gravity'

The HawtThorns are thrilled to announce the release of their second single accompanied by a video for "Nothing But A Shadow," The song is off of their forthcoming long player, Zero Gravity, out April 5th via Red Parlor Records.

Duende Films directed and filmed the noir-western track and features actor/dancer Kendel Legore. It takes place in a graveyard, with the singer frantically trying to remember prior chaotic events coming back in bits and pieces - until she finally realizes she is sitting on her tombstone.

Nothing But a Shadow’ came from living and creating in East Nashville, driving up the main drag, explains K.P. HawtThorn. There is an old graveyard that has a crowded bus stop each morning. It made us think of all the people and families buried there or getting on the bus to their day jobs or school. The South is old compared to our California home, and there is a sense of haunted romance in every old building, field, or cemetery. We imagined a woman who, in crossing to the other side, struggled with the reality of her fate.”

This third album from the Nashville-based duo's sun-kissed songwriting, deft guitar work, and lush vocal harmonies at the core of their sound is exponentially magnified through the lens of their upcoming Spring release. It includes 11 songs recorded at The Studio Nashville, owned by The Wood Brothers. The record was recorded with some of Nashville's most accomplished musicians. Musical director and bass player Ted Pecchio (Doyle Bramhall II, Oliver Wood) assembled the band for the sessions, which included Jano Rix (Wood Brothers) on all keys and Nick Buda (Kenny Chesney) on drums.

Zero Gravity is a sonic trip into deeply felt personal experiences, abstract storytelling, and adventurous, genre-bending productions. The HawtThorn's love for guitars is apparent on this record, as the layers of variously toned and textured electric and acoustic instruments are as much a part of the songwriting as are the lyrics. The interplay between far-out keyboard tracks and Johnny Hawthorn's trademark syncopated guitar hooks and riffs deliberately creates a unique appeal for each track. The music beds enhance K.P.'s fearless, wistfully honeyed lead vocals. The L.P. was recorded live, directly to 2-inch tape.

KP and Johnny Hawthorn have had celebrated careers that started in L.A.'s singer-songwriter and Alt-Country communities. They've made hundreds of recordings heard on network and cable T.V. and film. K.P. co-founded L.A.'s CALICO, the band, while Johnny fronted his own band and played in legacy acts, Toad the Wet Sprocket and Everclear. Their common ground has been the starting point for a sum more significant than its parts, an inspired combination of songwriting, vocals, and guitar work.

The close-knit Nashville music community is buzzing about The HawtThorns. The duo is rapidly becoming much sought after for special appearances and all-star tributes. Most recently, K.P. was asked to perform two Dolly Parton classics presented by Heavy Pedal Productions at The Vinyl Lounge. In March, The HawtThorns will embark on a Southwest tour, which touches down in Austin for a SXSW showcase at the storied Continental Club. Upon completing the Texas shows, they will tour the Midwest, South, and Northeast.

Zero Gravity will be available on all platforms, vinyl and CD on April 5th, 2024 via Red Parlor Records.
