Jo's Picks Of The Month is a regular monthly contribution, published exclusively in the Sound Café magazine with the intention of providing you with information on artists that you might not have heard of, but we think are truly worth exploring further.
ALLIE COLLEEN
Left to Right: Kae Shelby, Allie Colleen, and Jo Louks
On day one of our recent visit to Nashville, the first stop was Red Neck Riviera, where if you are a first responder or Enforcement Officer, they match you drink for drink. Since we had four badges with us, some enjoyed it more than others. We really enjoyed Janae and Cherry who took turns playing. Next stop Friends in Low Places. What a huge bar, 4 floors, so up we went to the top. We had singer-songwriter Kae Shelby with us from Ottawa, Ontario. As soon as she heard the singer, Kae started yelling, "It's Allie, it's Allie.
I remember Kae and two of our other friends, Rhonda and Julie who were also with us, talking about Allie and following Allie on socials. So I went and got the rest of our group, now all 10 of us were listening and dancing.
Welcome to Allie Colleen. Allie played for 3 hours straight, no easy thing to do. She took requests and chatted back and forth with us. Allie yelled out, I see the Canadians found the other Canadians, we met Chris and Pam from NFLD and partied all afternoon with them.
We asked Allie to play one of her originals, "Halos and Horns", interesting that the musicians can only play originals when the fans request them, so she was quite happy that we asked.
Allie sings from the heart and just loves writing, she's been playing guitar since she was 14, and just got a new one she named Honey Bagel, as her other guitar was damaged while being transported. I believe that was while opening for Jelly Roll. Yes you heard right, very well deserved!!!
I'm not gonna say much else except, check her out!! We had such a blast with Allie, hard to keep 10 people entertained for 3 hours, but she sure did. Hope you enjoy Halos and Horns and Allies other songs.
CALLIE McCULLOUGH
Callie is also in Nashville, unfortunately we didn't get to listen to Callie as she was playing an hour away from us.
Her new single, Test of Time, came out when we were there though. I was fortunate enough to meet Callie at Folk Music Ontario a couple of weeks earlier, thanks to The Sound Cafe.
Callie is Canadian but has been in Nashville for some time now. She is a singer-songwriter who is rootsy, traditional country, bluegrass and sometimes a bit contemporary.
"The song, the story, and the feel that leads the way", Callie is a sucker for the broken hearted sad songs. She grew up in a musical family and always knew that's what she wanted to do.
"My collection of K-TELS playing on my portable candle record player is where my relationship with and love for music of all genres began. It continued throughout my life, from going to concerts through to my more recent luck in being involved in an album production, from studio recording to mastering. WOW! What an experience, and from it I've gained an even greater respect and appreciation for what it takes to make great music!
Couple that with my air guitar acumen, and that of course makes me a consummate professional in bringing 'Jo's Picks Of The Month' to you.
All kidding aside my repertoire of songs is vast and what an honour it is to share my picks with the readers of The Sound Cafe Magazine!" - Jo.
