The legendary Colombian cumbia and gaita group Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto - winners of the 2007 Latin Grammy and nominated for the 2020 Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album - return to North American stages this summer in support of their new album, Orgullo Colombiano.
Tour dates include stops at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC on July 18th, Colombian Fest Chicago on July 21st, and globalFest at Lincoln Center in New York City on August 3rd (See full tour dates below).
Los Gaiteros are the torchbearers of Colombia’s deepest, heaviest cumbia: the traditional gaita-drum ensembles of the Caribbean coast. The multi-generational ensemble has been representing this sound in its raw, pure form since the 1950s, when they first toured Colombia under the leadership of folklorists Manuel and Delia Zapata Olivella.
The synthesis of flute and drums is hypnotic, feverish, and dance-inducing. It is also the story of how two cultures blended their musical traditions — the tambor rhythms of the African slave trade met the gaita, a wind instrument of the Cuna, Kogui and Zenue native peoples of the northern coast of Colombia.Released on digital platforms on May 31, 2024, Orgullo Colombiano(Colombian Pride) contains 12 songs, 10 of which are new, featuring well-known composers like Rafael Castro Fernández (the band's lead vocalist) and brilliant new talents like Marlon Peroza, known as the Poet of the Gaita.
The album is packed with cumbias, including "Quien No Conozca Mi Pueblo", "Dame Un Beso" and the title track. It also includes gaita corrida songs such as "Ya Se Va Mendoza, "El Camino Del Indio", and "El Canto D La Carracacha". The album also features notable musical collaborations, including the puya rhythm song "Cuando Cantan Las Mujeres" with Carmen Antolínez, known as The Cumbia Queen; and the gaita porro rhythm song "El Octubre Que Venia" with Marlon Peroza as the vocalist. Both guest singers are members of the group Gaiteros de Pueblo Santo.
Orgullo Colombiano was released on the OM Producciones Music label and distributed worldwide on vinyl LP by the American label Bad Vibes Good Friends from San Diego, California. The musical production of the album was overseen by Javier Mutis García, who has been with Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto for over 20 years, mixing their live concerts in Colombia and on all their international tours. The album was recorded at ABC Records studios in Barranquilla with capture and mixing engineering by Manuel Guillermo and mastering by C1 Mastering studios in Bogotá by engineer Carlos Silva. Associated executive producer Jorge Ortega from Chicago Colombian fest.
