From Global Stages To TV Screens: South African Cindy-Louise's Impactful Musical Journey And The Release of Her ‘Alone’ Music Video

Cindy-Louise

Step into the enchanting realm of ‘Whispers of a Kingdom’, the new concept album by internationally acclaimed artist Cindy-Louise.

This mesmerizing musical journey invites listeners on an immersive experience filled with dark fairy-tale aesthetics, mythical creatures, and emotionally resonant storytelling. With 10 resounding tracks, each boasting its own dark fairy-tale aesthetic, ‘Whispers of a Kingdom’ promises to deliver a truly immersive listening experience across Indie Alternative, Ethereal Cinematic, Folk, Dream Pop, and Rock genres.

We caught up with Cindy-Louise's to chat about 'Whispers of a Kingdom' captivated audiences with its fairy-tale aesthetics and emotionally resonant storytelling. We also speak about her new Music Video for ‘Alone’, a haunting and reflective track and video, perfectly encapsulates the album's thematic depth, telling the story of a solitary wanderer in a world brimming with life - a tale of finding solace in solitude.

Q: Can you share a pivotal moment from your childhood that ignited your passion for music?

Cindy-Louise: I vividly remember when my mom took me to London at around fourteen or fifteen years old. We watched the iconic west end production of ‘Mamma Mia’, and from that moment, I was captivated. I turned to my mom and said, "This is what I want to do with my life." The glamour, the lights, the entire atmosphere - it all completely fascinated me, and I knew I was hooked.

Q: How did your classical training and experiences at the Mediterranean Opera Festival influence your current musical style?

Cindy-Louise: My classical training and experience at the Mediterranean Opera Festival were instrumental in boosting my confidence on stage. They taught me how to truly harness my voice and understand my comfort zones. This training has deeply influenced my current style because I’m passionate about the theatrics and storytelling that operas and arias offer, and I wanted to blend that with modern pop and rock music. I'm also excited to explore the idea of incorporating my classical vocals into an EDM or bubble-gum pop setting - something I’m actively experimenting with right now.

Q: Your discography spans various genres from pop to rock and theatrical elements. How do you navigate these genre boundaries to create a cohesive artistic identity?

Cindy-Louise: I love to explore and push boundaries, and to stay true to my artistic identity, I always anchor everything back to the tone and colour of my vocals. I’m passionate about learning new techniques and collaborating with other artists, which is why I don’t like to limit myself to just one genre. Great music is simply great music, and in my opinion, an artist is so much more than just a genre.

Q: What inspired the theme and narrative behind your latest video for ‘Alone’, as well as your new album, 'Whispers of a Kingdom'?

Cindy-Louise: For this music video, I was deeply inspired by the interplay of shadows, light, and the contrast between darkness and brightness. The concept stemmed from the emotional experience of feeling isolated and disconnected from your own happiness, even when surrounded by loved ones. It’s that sense of being a shell of yourself, misunderstood, with your emotions and perspectives unseen. Introducing dance was a fresh venture for me, but it felt essential - dance is another powerful form of expression, a way to release and communicate emotions beyond words. That's why I integrated it into the video for “Alone."

Q: Could you walk us through your typical songwriting process? How do you begin crafting a new song?

Cindy-Louise: As I continue to write and co-produce songs, I've noticed how much my creative process has evolved. In the early days, I would simply sit at my piano and let the music flow naturally. Now, it has become a much more intricate and deliberate journey. I find myself closing my eyes and vividly imagining scenes - writing and creating have become highly visual experiences for me. I think about how I would emotionally respond to the words, and what elements would best set the scene. I focus on the build and the fall of the music. While a song might come together in an hour or take days, the foundation remains the same. I put immense focus on the lyrics and melody, letting the rest fall into place afterward.

Q: How do you balance the theatrical and rock aesthetics in your recent EP 'What You Made Me', in contrast to operatic and folk in your latest album ‘Whispers of a Kingdom’?

Cindy-Louise: For me, achieving balance in a project begins with a clear understanding of my intention from the very start. I enjoy experimenting with various genres, but it's crucial that I know exactly what I want the outcome to be before I dive in. For instance, with What You Made Me, I envisioned a harder, almost angry sound to capture the frustration and sadness of an internal battle. In contrast, for my album Whispers of a Kingdom, I aimed for a soft, light sound, evoking the essence of a fairytale or Disney-like atmosphere. Music and writing can become challenging if you don't have a clear vision of the end result. That's why it's essential to trust your instincts and stay true to your original idea, without letting others' opinions sway you.

Q: 'Women of My Own Damn Mind' was featured in the TV series 'Devil's Peak'. How did this opportunity come about, and what impact has it had on your career?

Cindy-Louise: I was incredibly excited when everything finally came together. This has been such a rewarding time in my career, and it's amazing to see my music being heard and used exactly as I intended. When the music director of the show reached out to me on Instagram, I initially thought it might be a prank, but it turned out to be real, and from there, we struck an agreement. While my career has not yet skyrocketed as much as I had hoped, I learned that growth often comes in small steps. I’m deeply grateful to the program and to all my supportive fans who have been with me on this journey.

Q: What has been the most challenging aspect of transitioning from South Africa to The Netherlands in terms of your musical journey?

Cindy-Louise: It’s been challenging for me to truly shine and secure opportunities here, as many organisations have established connections since their university days. Since I didn’t study in The Netherlands, it’s been a struggle to connect with musicians and organisers who take me seriously. However, I remain persistent, and through hard work, I've been able to meet some incredible people and land great opportunities.

Q: Your music videos often convey powerful visual narratives. How do you approach the storytelling aspect in your visual presentations, such as in 'Innocence' and 'Rise Up'?

Cindy-Louise: I always start by creating a mood board on my Pinterest page, which helps me visualize the concept. Then, I sit down with the director to share ideas and collaborate on the vision. My goal is always to convey an empowering narrative, but I also want people to draw their own interpretations from my music and videos. That's why I love getting creative and incorporating a variety of elements. One thing that remains consistent, though, is my color scheme. I believe it's crucial for linking emotions and reinforcing my artistic identity.

Q: The EP 'What You Made Me' delves into personal vulnerabilities and societal themes. How important is it for you to weave personal experiences into your music?

Cindy-Louise: As a public figure, I believe it’s essential to bring attention to serious societal issues, and for me, raising awareness about mental health is a top priority. Many people who struggle with mental health challenges don’t fully understand what t’re experiencing and often hesitate to seek help. I want my community to know that there’s no shame in facing these challenges and that seeking help is an act of bravery. Working through anxiety, depression, or any mental health issue requires immense strength, and I deeply respect anyone who takes on that journey. As an artist, I find that creating music that delves into these topics can offer listeners a sense of connection and reassurance, reminding them that they’re not alone. This is why I believe art plays such a vital role in society - it connects us, fosters understanding, and helps us grow.

Q: How has your perspective on identity and self-discovery evolved through your music career?

Cindy-Louise: My perspective on the music industry is constantly evolving, and I believe that as an artist, I’m growing with every experience. I always say that if you’re comfortable, it means you’re not growing. To achieve success in any field, you must get comfortable with being uncomfortable. As I’ve matured, I’ve noticed myself becoming more understanding and patient, and this growth adds a deeper, more nuanced tone to my storytelling.

Q: You've collaborated with artists like Erick Gerber. How do these collaborations enhance your creative process?

Cindy-Louise: I feel like I grow and learn new skills from my peers all the time. Being surrounded by talented individuals inspires me and pushes me to expand my own abilities.

Q: Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your approach to songwriting and performance?

Cindy-Louise: I find myself constantly inspired by the music and artistry around me. Some of my biggest influences include Sabrina Carpenter, Anne-Marie, Sleep Token, Aurora, and the new girl group Katseye. I have a deep appreciation for artists who not only create incredible music but also engage with their fans on social media and promote a positive mindset. These artists inspire me to stay connected with my audience and to use my platform to spread positivity.

Q: 'Humanity' and 'Whispers of a Kingdom' seem to tell intricate stories. Can you elaborate on the conceptualization process behind these albums?

Cindy-Louise: When I set out to create an album, the most important thing for me is to ensure that every song holds its own and has the potential to be a standout single. I avoid including any filler tracks; each song must be exceptional and meaningful. The placement of each track is also crucial, as I aim for the album to tell a cohesive story and align seamlessly with the overall theme. Every song is crafted and positioned with purpose, contributing to a unified and compelling narrative.

Q: What inspired the dark fairy-tale theme in 'Whispers of a Kingdom'?

Cindy-Louise: During the December holidays, I immersed myself in fantasy fiction and had a spark of inspiration: what if I based an entire album on a fantasy novel? While I don’t consider myself an author, I transformed the ideas and stories I encountered into musical expressions. This project beautifully merges my passions for reading, storytelling, and singing, allowing me to create a work that reflects the imaginative worlds I love.

Q: How do you adapt your studio recordings for live performances, and what do you enjoy most about performing live?

Cindy-Louise: I always remove the main vocal line from my backing tracks, which allows me to be more dramatic and expressive during live performances. It’s incredibly flattering when fans tell me they think I’m even better live than on a recording. I rarely perform with a band these days because some of the intricate instrumentation in my music can’t be replicated by live instruments alone. This approach also lets me focus entirely on my performance, without the added complexity of coordinating with other musicians.

Q: Could you share a memorable experience from one of your live shows that significantly impacted you as an artist?

Cindy-Louise: I absolutely love it when the audience gets up and dances—it’s a powerful sign that they’re deeply moved by the music and feel comfortable enough to truly be themselves at my shows. It creates an incredible connection and energy that makes performing even more rewarding.

Q: What has been the most challenging aspect of your music career so far, and how did you overcome it?

Cindy-Louise: Attracting attention is just one part of the equation. While talent is crucial, it accounts for only about ten percent of what truly drives a career forward. I often face challenges securing spots at festivals and getting airtime on radio stations, but I persistently push through. By leveraging social media and maintaining unwavering determination, I've seen a significant increase in opportunities and growth.

Q: In what ways do you feel you've grown as an artist since your debut album 'Humanity'?

Cindy-Louise: For one thing, my music has evolved significantly over time. While I don’t dislike my earlier work, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and the quality of my current music. I’m also proud of my steadfast belief in myself and my relentless perseverance in this career.

Q: How do you hope your music resonates with listeners, both emotionally and intellectually? What feedback or reactions from your audience have surprised or moved you the most?

Cindy-Louise: I’ve grown accustomed to the many facets of people’s personalities and find that nothing surprises me anymore. Connecting with fans and receiving messages about how much they enjoyed my show brings me immense joy. My hope is that when people listen to my music, they experience a sense of wonder and positivity. This is precisely why my new album has such a dream-like quality - I want to inspire hope and uplift those who hear it.

Q: Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you're excited about that you can share with us?

Cindy-Louise: I have some thrilling news set to be announced early next year! Make sure to stay updated on my Instagram and TikTok - @cindylouisemusic, as you’re going to love what’s coming next. I can't wait to share it with you all!

Q: How do you envision your musical journey evolving in the next few years?

Cindy-Louise: I envision a future filled with busyness, but I’m excited about this evolution and committed to embracing every step of the journey. I will work tirelessly to ensure that I continue to meet both my own standards and the expectations of my fans.

Q: You studied Music Philosophy. How has this academic background influenced your approach to music creation and interpretation?

Cindy-Louise: I think I simply experience things differently, and I always strive to understand others. I believe that emphasising this perspective in my studies has contributed to the open-minded person I am today.

Q: What role does spirituality or introspection play in your creative process?

Cindy-Louise: I’m a very open person, and I believe that this openness is key to my creativity. It allows me to fully embrace my emotions and channel them into my creations.

Q: Your music has gained international recognition. How do you perceive the global music scene, and how has it influenced your artistic path?

Cindy-Louise: "International" is indeed a broad term, but it motivates me to continually strive for improvement and growth. The impact is clear: the more effort I put in, the more I receive in return. Nothing comes easily; you must work diligently for it. This mindset of aiming higher helps me reach new heights and stay aligned with my purpose. I’m committed to maintaining this focus as I continue to evolve in my career.

Q: What differences do you notice between the music scenes in South Africa and The Netherlands?

Cindy-Louise: Being in the Netherlands is a tremendous gift, providing me with broad opportunities across Europe. The ease of travel and the innovative, modern music scene here make it an ideal environment for my growth. South Africa is also amazing, but I sometimes feel that artistry isn’t always a priority there. I believe the Netherlands offers the perfect setting for me to expand my horizons and develop my craft.

Q: Your songs often touch on societal themes. How important is it for you to address these issues through your music?

Cindy-Louise: As an artist, I believe it's my responsibility to address important issues. If artists and public figures don’t use their platforms to speak up, then who will? It’s crucial for us to contribute to meaningful conversations and drive positive change.

Q: How do you balance between personal storytelling and making broader social statements in your lyrics?

Cindy-Louise: At the end of the day, connecting with my fans is what matters most to me. If being completely honest in my lyrics and opening helps someone navigate their own personal challenges, I’m more than willing to take that step. However, the nature of each project can influence my approach. For example, when creating music for a specific film, the focus may be more on fitting the cinematic context rather than reflecting my personal views. As an artist, I recognize that sometimes my music serves both as a personal expression and a professional endeavour.

Q: How has modern technology and digital platforms affected the way you produce and distribute your music?

Cindy-Louise: I think it's fantastic that I can release music independently. While I'm open to working with a label, the freedom to choose is invaluable. It’s also remarkable how far music has come, especially with advances in technology. For example, to save costs, I recorded most of my latest album in my home studio, and the results were phenomenal. The ability to produce high-quality music from home has been a game-changer.

Q: What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry, especially for independent artists like yourself?

Cindy-Louise: There is an overflow of hobbyists in the music industry. While I firmly believe that music is for everyone and that expressing oneself creatively is wonderful, it can be challenging to find music I personally enjoy amid the sheer volume of releases. This is a complex issue. On one hand, everyone should have the opportunity to produce and release music. On the other hand, the market is flooded with content that often doesn’t meet certain standards, but defining those standards can be subjective. This is how I feel as a listener, but it also ties into my views as an artist.

Q: Your music videos are visually striking. How do you collaborate with directors and visual artists to bring your music to life visually?

Cindy-Louise: In the end, I remain open to the director’s views, but I make the final decisions regarding the music video’s look and the scenery to best enhance the storytelling. Collaborating with creative people is a wonderful experience, and I feel fortunate that we often reach agreements easily. For my latest music video, ALONE, I directed and filmed it myself. I discovered a deep passion for the entire process and wanted to demonstrate that you don’t need a large crew to create something professional.

Q: What role does visual storytelling play in enhancing the themes and messages in your songs?

Cindy-Louise: As a very visual person, I find that creating music in a visual manner enhances the overall experience. By integrating a music video at the end, I can truly bring my creation to life, adding a compelling visual dimension that complements and elevates the music.

Q: How do you engage with your fans, and what role do they play in your artistic journey?

Can you share a memorable fan interaction that left a lasting impression on you?

Cindy-Louise: My fans mean everything to me; without them, I wouldn’t be able to continue making music. The music industry is incredibly challenging to break into, but I keep creating because I know my work resonates with them and enriches their lives. The most rewarding interactions are when I receive messages from fans or when they approach me after a show to share how my music has positively impacted them. That’s all the validation I need.

Q: Looking ahead, what legacy do you hope to leave through your music and artistic endeavours?

Cindy-Louise: I hope to leave behind music that is timeless, and I want to be remembered for positive reasons - whether it's my unique style, my personality, or my distinctive sound.

Q: How do you measure success personally, beyond commercial achievements?

Cindy-Louise: For me, success is defined by continuous improvement. After every show, when I reflect on how amazing my voice was and see that all the hard work has paid off, it feels like a true achievement. I always believe I can do better and strive to be the best version of myself in every aspect of my craft.

Q: If you could go back and give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Cindy-Louise: The advice I would give myself is to never let anyone bring you down and to keep shining brightly.

Q: If your music were a color palette, which colours would it include, and why?

Cindy-Louise: My color palette consists of pink, purple, blue, red, and black. I’m drawn to these colours because they resonate with who I am and what my music represents. Each of these strong hues helps me stand out and express myself in a bold and impactful way.

Q: What's the most unusual place or situation where you've found inspiration for a song?

Cindy-Louise: In the kitchen, while tapping on the counter, I wrote my song "Woman of My Own Damn Mind.”

Q: If you could have any mythical creature as a pet, which one would you choose and how would it inspire your music?

Cindy-Louise: I would choose a mini magical panda, as it’s both cute and aligns with my love for pandas. It would inspire me to stay strong while also reminding me to be kind, which would positively influence my music and creative process.

Q: Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring musicians who are just starting their musical journey?

Cindy-Louise: I would advise to keep going and always remain open-minded. Additionally, be diligent in your efforts and show respect to everyone you work with.
