By Megan Routledge.
Paula Punch songs reflect the stories of her life. They are tinged with hope, yearning, and themes of finding one’s empowerment and narratives about our precious natural world. While her music is hard to define, she would say she is an indie folk/pop rocker with an alt country flavour.
While she always wrote poems, and sang in choirs and bands, she only started writing music when she was home alone with 2 young boys. Her studies had been in science, but her career since has been in the fashion world while always dreaming of recording and performing her music.
Paula left her full-time job in 2015 to pursue her more creative side in fashion and music.
Very soon her music took centre stage, and in 2018 she released her first album “Don’t Look Down” which was recorded and mixed by Robin Gist in his home studio, and she toured California with New Zealand artist Jackie Bristow.
Even though she was married to a studio owner, she finally recorded her 2nd album “Song to the Trees” at Electric Avenue Studios, in 2020, decades after they met. This album was recorded with Paula’s band “The Fireflys” with the help of many great local musicians who added their talent to this wonderful album.
Her fabulous band on the Album: Robin Gist on Electric guitar (ex ‘Girl Overboard’), Marko Simec on Keyboards, & Accordion (“Waiting for Guinness” “Soul Movers” “Rufino and the Coconuts”), Mike Rix on bass (“Jason Walker”), Reuben Alexander on percussion/drums (“Liz Martin band”, “Melody Pool” and "William Crichton"). “Song to the Trees” is an eclectic mix of genres and reflect just some of the threads that are woven into Paula’s story. And there is more to come from this storyteller.
Paula was consistently playing live in Sydney with her band “The Fireflys” at the “Django at Camelot”, and other inner west venues. She created a local showcase for singer-songwriters called “The Punch Sessions” where special guests have included Abi Tucker, Tania Bowra, Glenn Bidmead, Dan Mullins, Lisa Schouw, My Sauce Good and Tania Sparke. In 2019 she opened for Russell Morris, Karise Eden and Renee Geyer at Camelot Lounge to appreciative audiences.
Songs from her last album Full Moon Rising’ and ‘Tender reaching Top 10 on the AMRAP Metro Chart and on the Australian Country Radio charts.
Her single “Superpower” is a Brit Pop style love song. “Love is like a fragile flower - to be handled with care and respected, as it is such a powerful feeling, like a secret superpower that we all have” says Paula. It is upbeat yet poignant, and, like new love, it makes you feel good, with a pulsing, fresh 60's vibe.
