Jo's Picks Of The Month is a regular monthly contribution, published exclusively in the Sound Café magazine with the intention of providing you with information on artists that you might not have heard of, but we think are truly worth exploring further.
DASHA
Dasha, born as Anna Dasha Novotny, is an American country pop singer-songwriter. Dasha was born and raised in California, and is of Czech descent. She learned to play piano and guitar at the young age of 8. Her Dad was her first talent manager and booked her gigs in coffee shops and wineries at age of 10.
She released her first song at the age of 13. She went to Belmont University until the onset of Covid, when she dropped out, and pursued her music career. In 2020 she signed with Quadio Records.
In 2021 and 22 she released singles for her debut album Dirts Blonde. In 2023, Dasha released the single "Austin" which is country, Austin marked her first entry on the Billboard charts and peaked at number 19, in June 2024.
Austin also peaked in Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and the United Kingdom. She then signed with Warner Records. In April 2024, she performed Austin live at the 2024 CMT Awards in (go figure) Austin, Texas.
Just goes to show it only takes one hit to make it big. Congrats Dasha, love the song Austin, hope ya'll do too.
TWENTY ONE PILOTS
Twenty One Pilots are an American music duo from Columbus, Ohio. Initially a band, but broke up in 2011, which left Tyler Joseph lead vocalist and drummer Josh Dun.
The duo received a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards for Stressed Out. The band embarked on their worldwide Bandito Tour, starting in the U.S., then heading to Oceania, Europe, Canada and Mexico.
The band's stunts during the set included leaping, backflipping, vertical crowd-surfing, suspended bridge walking, and scaffolding scaling. In 2020 Level of Concern, was released, it references Covid 19 pandemic-induced anxiety, and the video was filmed in Joseph and Dun's homes while they were under lockdown.
Some of the proceeds went to Crew Nation, a charity for live music crews who could not be paid during the lockdowns. The Craving was released as the fourth single on the album Next Semester in 2024.
Not sure how you would classify the duo, they pretty much have a little of every genre to categorize it. Despite their chart-topping dominance, many of the songs feature no guitar.
According to the band, their purpose for making music is "to make people think" and encourage them to find joy in what they come to believe in life.
I could go on and on about Twenty One Pilots, but I'll leave it at that. Hope you enjoy "The Craving", one of the duo's latest.
"My collection of K-TELS playing on my portable candle record player is where my relationship with and love for music of all genres began. It continued throughout my life, from going to concerts through to my more recent luck in being involved in an album production, from studio recording to mastering. WOW! What an experience, and from it I've gained an even greater respect and appreciation for what it takes to make great music!
Couple that with my air guitar acumen, and that of course makes me a consummate professional in bringing 'Jo's Picks Of The Month' to you.
All kidding aside my repertoire of songs is vast and what an honour it is to share my picks with the readers of The Sound Cafe Magazine!" - Jo.
